Homework at St. Dunstan's

What is homework?

The majority of homework activities set by teachers for pupils, are for pupils to practise their basic skills in reading, spelling and number. There may also be activities where children develop their research skills or inquiry skills or they may be more focused tasks for children to complete in other subjects such as RE, Science or History.

Homework is not designed to be a challenge for the pupils or indeed, the parents! Pupils should be able to complete their homework independently, with some parental support where needed, as homework will never be something new and the homework is explained in class.

When is homework given?

Pupils in Lower Years do not have any formal homework. Pupils will have a reading book to take home and read with a parent each night, as we firmly believe that a confident reader will be a confident learner. There may be occasions that teachers will give parents some additional learning where it is thought, by the teacher, to be appropriate.

In Key Stage 2, pupils are set weekly homework tasks which become longer in length as the pupils move through the school years. Homework starts during the first full week of term and the last piece of homework will be set in the penultimate full week of each term.

How can parents support their children?

If your child is not feeling confident, please use the links on the left hand side to see if there are any examples or resources you can use to help you to support your child.

What we ask of the children:

1. Write in pencil. If they are ‘on pen’ and are completing English, they may write in blue pen. Pencil always for maths please.
2. Write the date (short date for maths)
3. Use their best handwriting: cursive and legible.
4. Present their work as they would in their school books
5. Stick in any sheets neatly, using the lines in the book to guide them. Only write on the sheets if they have been instructed to.

What we ask of parents:
  • Support your child to have an independent and conscientious approach to their homework.

  • Ensure they work for the allotted time. If the homework content is too challenging at the time, write a brief note in the homework book or the homework diary.

  • Use the methods taught in school to support and model any work.

  • Indicate where any work has been heavily supported at home so teachers have a clear understanding of the child’s level of confidence.

  • Support children to learn their spellings and practise their times tables as these basic skills are vital for children to be more confident in their learning.

  • Read with, listen to their child read or check their child reads each day and sign the diary.

Teachers will:

Review all children’s books, though to develop the children’s responsibility for their own learning, children do also correct and review their own work in class. This helps them to know where they are being successful and what they still need to practise and often gives them the opportunity to correct and improve their work.

Support children to complete their homework: if a child has been unable to complete their homework or they know they will not be able to complete their homework on time due to commitments, teachers will ensure they are able to attend the homework club or catch up during a break time. Homework club is available for children in the Middle Years on a Thursday lunch time and Upper Years on a Thursday and Friday lunch time.
