Year 2 Topic Rationale
Summer 2nd half term

AeroplaneThe trip to Wisley Gardens will start our new term and topic. The workshop is entitled ‘Fantastic food, healthy life-style’ and will focus on exploring vegetables to identify and discover edible plants. The children also find out how their food is grown and where it comes from. They will also have the opportunity to explore how growing the food we eat affects our planet. Following on from our trip we will revise the features of a recount as they write about a real life event.

In this topic we will look at all aspects of healthy eating. Through the text ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’ by Vivien French. The learners will follow his journey of trying and eating new and different types of food. Some of the vegetables that Oliver begins to eat in the book the children will have seen growing on their trip to Wisley which will be a super link in their learning. The second text is called ‘Kitchen Disco’ by Clare Foges which will give the children the chance to identify and write rhymes and use alliteration and descriptive language. It will also provide the opportunity to write and perform their own verses.

In Maths as well revising all four operations and working on number sentences with a missing number. We will continue to work on all aspects of measure and this will give us lots of opportunities to take the learning outside and use practical resources. There will also be a chance to revise place value and inverse operations.

Our Science learning links directly to our topic as the children will describe the importance for humans of exercise, eating the right amounts of different types of food, and hygiene. Choosing healthy ingredients for their sandwich will help them to recall facts from their trip. Also included in our Design and Technology curriculum, the children will be making their own felt puppets using simple sewing stitches.

Our R.E topics include’ Rules’ where the children develop and understand how rules can help at home and school. Appreciating the reasons for rules in the church family. The topic of ‘Treasures’ is where the children begin to learn that the world is God’s precious treasure, given to us to appreciate and value. To know we are all God’s treasures.
