Creative Arts Week

“I think having a creative arts week in school is a wonderful opportunity you give to our children to express themselves individually and positively in their own way. There is no right or wrong it's their creation not to be compared. It should be a fun week to be looked forward to.”

During the spring term each year, the children look forward to Creative Arts Week.   Throughout the half term, the children work with keen interest and determination to develop their art skills through a whole school theme.  We carefully select themes which allow the children to be inspired by the learning and to have a real sense of purpose to their work.

Previous Creative Arts Week themes have been:

  • Brazil
  • Africa
  • India
  • Portraits
  • God’s Wonderful World

This year’s theme was The Holy Family which allowed a spiritual element to be incorporated into the children’s learning. The children considered what the Holy Family meant to them and how they could be inspired by the Holy Family’s love and care.  They also explored how artists commonly or uniquely represent Mary, Joseph and Jesus in art to help them plan their own piece of art.

As the children start the spring term, they use the teacher’s modelled work as a benchmark to know what it is they are aiming to achieve.  Then they work slowly and carefully to learn new skills and techniques or build upon their existing skills, thoughtfully building and practising these skills so they have the confidence to use them as they begin to create their own composition.  As children gain confidence and through repeated attempts, they make their own creative decisions e.g. the colour choices, composition, media, size, so each piece of work is unique to the child and their choices.

Knowing their work will be displayed for all children and parents, helps children to work with a clear sense of audience.  They readily give each other feedback and carefully consider what they could do to improve their work in readiness for their final piece.

“Well done to the children and teachers for all the amazing, unique and beautiful work produced. The exhibition was very well organised and the music playing in the background brought a warm and peaceful atmosphere to the event.”

“A fantastic exhibition. Truly uplifting.”
